Jones has said he got much more experience with music growing up in a smaller city; otherwise, he would have faced too much competition. Jones cites Ray Charles as an early inspiration for his own music career. He noted that Charles overcame a disability (blindness) to achieve his musical goals. He has credited his father's sturdy work ethic with giving him the means to proceed, and his loving strength with holding the family together. Jones has said his father had a saying: . Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all. After only one semester, Jones transferred to what is now the Berklee College of Music in Boston on another scholarship (as of 2. It took the myopic conflict between just black and white in the United States and put it on another level because you saw the turmoil between the Armenians and the Turks, and the Cypriots and the Greeks, and the Swedes and the Danes, and the Koreans and the Japanese. In 1. 95. 7, Quincy settled in Paris, where he studied composition and theory with Nadia Boulanger and composer Olivier Messiaen. He also performed at the Paris Olympia. Jones became music director at Barclay Disques, a leading French record company and the licensee for Mercury Records in France. During the 1. 95. Jones successfully toured throughout Europe with a number of jazz orchestras. As musical director of Harold Arlen's jazz musical Free and Easy, Quincy Jones took to the road again. A European tour closed in Paris in February 1. With musicians from the Arlen show, Jones formed his own big band, called The Jones Boys, with eighteen artists. The band included double bass player Eddie Jones and fellow trumpeter Reunald Jones, and organized a tour of North America and Europe. Though the European and American concerts met enthusiastic audiences and sparkling reviews, concert earnings could not support a band of this size. Poor budget planning resulted in an economic disaster; the band dissolved and the fallout left Jones in a financial crisis. Quoted in Musician magazine, Jones said about the ordeal. That's when I discovered that there was music, and there was the music business. If I were to survive, I would have to learn the difference between the two. While there are plenty of acting coaches, few, if any, continually work as professionals in the business. There are subtleties and nuances to being a professional actor that just cannot be understood by those who’ve spent the majority of their career on the sidelines. The philosophy is simple. Jeff sums up his approach best in this excerpt from his book: “What I’ve discovered is, that rather than over think and over work an acting approach that has little to do with the real way humans deal with life’s dilemmas, it was better to simply focus on what people actually concern themselves with and leave the rest to instinct. Shouldn’t there be a method of approaching our work that falls more in line with the way humans actually confront conflict? Classical Athens refers to the city of Athens from 5. BC. Athenian democracy was established in 5. BC under Cleisthenes, after the tyranny of the Peistratids and the rule of Isagoras. This system remained remarkably stable, and with a few brief interruptions remained in place for 1. BC. Athens was one of the most powerful cities in ancient times. It was important because there democracy developed. Athens began the Delian League to join the city- states for protection. Their rival was the Peloponnesian League led by Sparta. The Delian League's money was kept in the temple of Apollo. In the classical period, Athens was a center for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Akademia and Aristotle's Lyceum. It is widely referred to as the cradle of western civilization, and the birthplace of democracy. In time, the Persians attacked Greece and the Greco- Persian wars began. On the plain of Marathon, many Persians with bows and arrows fought the Greeks. Even though there were many more Persians than Greeks, the Greeks won because they had spears and swords of metal. Themistocles, a statesman of Athens, warned the Athenians that the Persians would return, so they should make their navy bigger. The people did so, and Sparta offered to help. The Persians won the battle of Thermopylae but the battle gave the Greeks time to get ready. Athens is the capital city of Greece. It is one of the most famous cities in the world. Although the city of Athens was burnt down before the Persians left, most of the people had run away to the nearby islands for safety. Themistocles ordered the Greeks to prepare for another attack. This time he told them to leave their ships in the Bay of Salamis. When the Persians arrived, they were surprised and confused by the harbor that was so full of ships they could not travel in it. In this battle of Salamis a few hundred Greek ships destroyed many, many Persian ships. Xerxes went away. The next year, another battle happened, which 3. Greek hoplites and 5. The Persians did not attack Greece again. Even though Sparta and Athens helped each other in battle, they were very different culturally. In 4. 31 to 4. 04 B. C., these two city- states fought in a conflict called the Peloponnesian War after the name of the lower part of the peninsula. Sparta had help from other states. Athens kept inside the city walls, but many people died because of a terrible sickness, including Pericles. Athens' navy was taken by Spartans who had been trained severely since they were children. In 4. 04 B. C., Athens surrendered to Sparta. For 3. 0 years Sparta ruled, but many people did not like Spartan government, and Thebes, another city- state, helped Athens defeat Sparta. For nine years Thebes was the most powerful state. However, Greece was much weaker because of the wars inside her country. Philip of Macedonia began to move into Greek territory. Although Demosthenes warned Athens of the danger, Athenians did not care. At Chaeronea, Philip of Macedonia controlled Greece. When Philip died, his son, Alexander the Great, even though he was only 2. He won Asia Minor, Persia, Egpyt, and some parts of India, but he died when he was 3. The people in Athens ate simply, usually barley cakes, onions, fish, and fruit. For clothes the men wore short pieces of cloth (tunics), aprons, and sandals for work. A woman wore a chiton, which was a long, loose cloth that was attached to the shoulder. The loose garment was like a blouse because of a rope worn around the waist. Sandals were made by putting the foot on a piece of skin while the shoemaker made a covering for the foot. For fun, they also raced little chariots pulled by dogs. They were taught by slaves, and learned poetry, music, and dancing. Exercise was also important. When a young man became 1. For protection in wrestling, he tied leather strips around his wrists. Teachers from many lands taught the young men. The Greek hoplites fought so close together that their shields overlapped with each other. Their spears were very long. Women in ancient and classical Athens were treated with little respect. They could not become citizens of Athens. This means they could not vote and did not have any direct say in what happened in Athens. They could not run for election. Girls could not be citizens. They left their home at the age of 1. Her marriage would be arranged by her father. On most occasions, the father would pick a rich husband for his daughter. The girl and her mother had no say in who she married, it was entirely the father's choice. Contrast that with Sparta. Spartan women enjoyed a status, power, and respect that was unknown in the rest of the classical world. Although Spartan women were excluded from military and political life they enjoyed considerable status as mothers of Spartan warriors. As men engaged in military activity, women took responsibility for running estates. BC Spartan women owned approximately between 3. Spartan land and property. This woman of many names was one of the queens of the Amazons. The Amazons were a warrior race of women who were descended of Ares, the god of war. They would sometimes meet with men of other nations to create future generations, but they would raise only the girls, killing the boys. Once she was aboard Theseus set sail for Athens, claiming the queen as his bride. Most of the great heroes in ancient Greece fought in an Amazonomachy, and Theseus could not be left out. The Amazons made camp in Attica on a hill that has been described as . It would become the most famous court of law of ancient times. The apostle Paul gave one of his best known speeches on the Areios Pagos. Scorned, Hippolyta went back to the Amazons, while Hippolytus had problems of his own with his new stepmother. It was her girdle that Heracles was sent to retrieve for Admeta, the daughter of king Eurystheus. The girdle was a waist belt from Ares that signified her authority as queen of the Amazons. Upon hearing his request, she agreed to let him take the girdle. Hera, however, was not pleased, as was often the case with Heracles. To stop him, Hera came down to the Amazons disguised as one of their own and ran through the land, crying that Heracles meant to kidnap their queen. Probably remembering all too well what Theseus had done, the Amazons charged toward the ship to save Hippolyta. Fearing that Hippolyta had betrayed him, Heracles hastily killed her, ripped the girdle from her lifeless body, and set sail, narrowly escaping the raging warriors. With an army of Amazons behind her, Hippolyta returned to Athens and stormed into the wedding of Theseus and Phaedra. She declared that anyone partaking in the festivities would perish, but in the melee that ensued she was killed, either accidentally by her companion Penthesileia or by Theseus' men.
